Cockroaches are useful for studying how structures and behaviours help an organism survive in many environments.
Structural adaptations
- Flattened body: helps the cockroach squeeze into narrow spaces.
- Long antennae: help it sense surroundings, food and danger.
- Hard exoskeleton: protects the body and reduces water loss.
- Fast legs: help it escape from predators quickly.
Behavioural adaptations
- Nocturnal activity: reduces exposure to predators and humans.
- Hiding in cracks: helps it avoid danger.
- Scavenging: allows it to feed on many types of food.
- Rapid escape response: helps it survive threats.
