Spelling Strategies

Build Spelling Awareness

A practical page for noticing spelling patterns, roots and common traps.

Spelling is not only memory. Students can improve spelling by noticing root words, syllables, prefixes, suffixes and common patterns.

Sound it out, then check the root

Break the word into smaller parts. Ask what root word is hiding inside and what suffix has been added.

Common checks

  • Vowels: visible, awkward, scenery.
  • Double consonants: beginning, running, occurring.
  • Suffixes: -ly, -tion, -ance, -ment.
  • Root changes: describe to description, reassure to reassurance.

Student reminder

Student Note

“Do not just stare at the word. Break it, hear it, check the root.”

“Spelling improves when patterns become visible.”
