Social studies 2020

Social studies is a mixture of geography and history. It is a pity we do not have enough lessons to enjoy.

Recent updates:

Is Singapore MRT the only reason for underground usage? How are we able to dig underground? (A vid on an older version of a boring machine is provided too)

Check these out:

Unfortunately, I am unable to find any videoes for old school textbooks in Singapore, perhaps due to copyright issues. I am also unable to find any video specifically about the history of Nee Soon or Yishun before 2002. Hope the videoes will still help since they do talk about buildings or structures which have been in Yishun for a loooonnnnggg time.

Hope Yishun people will be proud of Yishun and that Singaporeans can appreciate that we have so much precious stuff in Singapore.

Recent requests consist of Bukit Ho Swee fire, old hospitals and police station. One other interesting request is about pandemics in the past in our region. I would like to repeat what I have mentioned earlier that I was unable to find any video on the past about Huamin Pri though.

Bukit Ho Swee fire

Story of old Changi Hospital

Another hospital from the past

Education in the past and why it matters

Police stations of the past

Pandemics in the past

Huamin is the present name. Before mergence, it was Huamien. Perhaps the reason for the name lies in the Chinese characters of the name, otherwise, it is not clearly stated. Surprisingly, it was founded in 1945, the year the World War 2 ended. This is all the information which can be found in the school website. Click here to check the web page about the school history.

An interesting video of Huamin video production is included here.

Apparently, the Istana built in the past is no longer in use. The present Istana is newly built.

The Duxton is a very special HDB which people can easily mistake it as a condominium.

Land (villages) is going to be lost due to the rise in sea level. It is a real problem which Singapore is finding solution for.

Stilt houses are usually built by the sea to cope with the low and high tide. Sea and land pollution are not helping the communities who still live in the stilt houses.

Hawkers of the past in colonial Singapura

This part needs verification (meaning more checks). Singapore only has her own police force shortly after World War 2 (1940s). Previously, the people who guarded important buildings in colonial Singapura may be soldiers/ sepoys. There may also be English people setting up a provisional police force for law and order. The Chinese also set up a Chinese Protectorate to help Chinese who suffered from unfair treatment. I apologise for the lack of information here.

I managed to find this video which depicts one of the oldest retired policeman. How cool is that?

I was asked to look up Mr Lim Kim San’s videoes. I am surprised to find 3 long videoes. Apparently many people knew him and he was well-known for his character. Find out why. One point struck me was that he did not ask for this leadership position.
