Why English
English Is More Than an Exam Subject
A parent-and-student page on why English matters for thinking, learning and communication.
English affects how students read, write, speak, explain, infer, question and understand the world around them.
A strong English foundation supports not only PSLE performance but also learning across subjects.
Parent Note
English is the subject most likely to affect your child’s confidence across all other subjects. When a child can read carefully, explain clearly and write with direction, everything else becomes easier. The goal here is not just a good grade — it is clearer thinking.
English is a thinking subject
Students need English to make sense of information, explain reasons, understand people and connect ideas.
Reading level matters
Reading level is not just about difficult words. It is about awareness of what is happening in the world, understanding human behaviour, noticing cause and effect, and making connections between people, events and ideas.
